COMMUNITY OUTREACH

GANDHI MANAV KAYLAN SOCIETY (GMKS)

PREPARING OUTSTANDING INDIVIDUALS FOR SOCIAL EXCELLENCE

(P.O.I.S.E. PLAN)

STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION, SPELMAN COLLEGE

Located in the Oghna community directly outside of Udaipur, India, GMKS sponsors women self-help groups, child development programs, and environmental development initiatives. Their work is based in 800 villages spreading throughout 10 districts in Oghna. My greatest accomplishment while working with GMKS was helping connect self-help women groups gain greater partnerships that enhanced their earnings. After working with GMKS I submitted a briefing  report that outlined solutions that  encouraged GMKS to help women establish bank accounts and credit that would ultimately enhance women participants confidence and probability of acquiring resources. I am proud to say GMKS utilizes this initiative as they assist women participants in the self-help women and family groups.

The P.O.I.S.E Plan is a partnership between Spelman College and Booker T. Washington High School’s Early College Program. The initiative establishes a linked partnership between the two institutions functioning to educate and empower their surrounding community.  During the yearlong project, the affiliated schools collaborated in various areas to promote scholarly outlook and public service. Through community service initiatives sponsored by Spelman, BTW-EC students gained community service hours that helped them complete their service requirement for gradation. The project overall increased student's likelihood of attending four-year universities and colleges. As a result of the partnership, student’s intellectual confidence increased. This was measured by a 40% attendance increase at the high school and students' enhanced interest in higher education.

Currently, I serve as the 71st President of the Student Government Association at Spelman

College. Each semester I submit a board report that provides a snapshot of all of the initiatives that our association has conducted during the semester. To mention a few: In height of the national election season, SGA led a total of ten voter registration drives throughout the Spelman community. Considering the large number of out of state student voters, SGA also provided individual assistance for absentee applications daily (http://www.spelmansga.com/vote-absentee.html). This past Thanksgiving, we delivered over 90 baskets of canned goods to Atlanta homeless families and teen mothers. In addition to this work, under our administration we increased student scholarships by 40% and have played a vital role in redefining ambigious policies at the college.
